The sheet from ETA diorama is a printed paper accessory meant for rounding out an urban scene in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit and these are not decals lifted off with water, but printed paper from which you cut the posters out yourself and glue them onto a wall, a fence, a post or into a glazed display frame. Placing them in the middle of the first decade of this century helps anchor a scene in a particular time – and a datable detail is exactly what turns a wall into a backdrop with a story.
The undercoat has to be smooth and matte; on rough render the paper buckles and the joint opens up. Coat the back of the poster with a thin layer of PVA glue, lay it on and press the air out with a soft brush from the center to the edges. On convex surfaces, a post for example, dampen the paper lightly first – it will give way to the curve without creases. When you glue posters over one another, let the lower layer dry and shift the upper one off axis, to create the untidiness typical of pasted-up surfaces.
A new poster in a weathered street does not look believable. Lift the corners with a blunt tip and let them peel away, tear the edges gently, wear the paper through in places with abrasive paper of a very fine grit. A fade is suggested by a very thin glaze of a light color, dirt by dry pigment drawn from top to bottom. At the end unify the whole area with matte clear coat, so that the sheen of the printing matches the surrounding wall.
