1:35 Road Signs Set is a printed paper sheet of road signs for dioramas in 1:35 scale from the firm ETA diorama. It is not a kit and not a decal – the motifs are cut out of the sheet and glued onto a stand of your own or straight onto a surface in a scene.

Road signage is a small thing in a scene that decides whether a diorama comes across as a piece of real landscape or as a base under a model. This sheet in 1:35 scale offers printed sign motifs that the modeler cuts out and fits himself. Paper has the advantage over a decal that a sign can be double-sided and stand freely in space – it is enough to glue it on both sides onto thin sheet metal or onto a card insert and a real board with a thickness is created, not just printing on plastic.
A sign belongs at the roadside, at an intersection, by a barrier or at the entrance to a compound. It works best in a pair with machinery: a sign by the road gives the viewer a scale and explains where the column is driving. Do not overdo the number – one or two signs in a whole scene are enough; a real road is not strewn with signs as densely as it seems while building. The 1:35 scale matches standard figures and vehicles in this scale, so the height of the post against a person comes out without recalculating.
Cut the motif out with a scalpel with a new edge; with round signs a circle punch or patient turning of the mat helps. Prepare the backing of the sign from thin plastic or aluminum sheet and the post from wire or a round profile. Glue the paper with PVA glue applied in a thin layer to the backing, then press the motif down with a flat tool, so that no bubbles remain. Darken the edge of the cut with a marker or pastel, otherwise the white paper section will glare. Finally the patina – dust from the road, small patches of rust on the post and matte clear coat, which takes the paper sheen off. A slightly bent or leaning sign always looks better than a perfectly vertical one.
