About product

Cromwell Mk. IV and Centaur C.S. Mk. IV — photo-etched fenders 1:35, Voyager Model

The photo-etched set from the Voyager Model brand replaces the fenders of the British Cromwell Mk. IV and Centaur C.S. Mk. IV tanks in 1:35 scale. British cruiser tanks had long sheet-metal fenders above the tracks, which are necessarily overscale in injection-molded plastic; a metal replacement has a thickness close to reality and the edges look considerably more credible once painted. At the same time the set allows a suggestion of bent or missing parts, as tends to be seen in period photographs.

The real subject

The Cromwell was a British cruiser tank of the Second World War, powered by the Rolls-Royce Meteor engine, which was derived from the Merlin aero engine. Thanks to it the tank was among the fast machines in its class. The Mk. IV version carried a 75 mm gun. The Centaur was a closely related type with a different powerplant; in the C.S. version, that is in the close support form, it had a 95 mm howitzer in place of the gun, intended for fire against area targets. Both types share the hull and the running gear, and that is why the same set of fenders fits them.

Building and painting tips

Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel or with photo-etch scissors on a hard surface, and make the bends in a photo-etch bender or between two blades, so that the edge is sharp and straight. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and more experienced modelers solder it. Before painting, degrease the metal and apply a primer intended for metal surfaces, otherwise the paint holds badly. Thin etched fenders will take a suggestion of bending and damage, which lends the model credibility. Cut the original plastic fenders off and level the surface before gluing the metal on. Bend long parts in one step along the whole length, otherwise a ripple arises. Assemble and paint the running gear before the fenders close off the access. British vehicles tend to be built in dark green shades; build up the weathering with earth-toned washes and pigments from the bottom upward.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building British armored vehicles of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Those who want to replace overscale plastic fenders with metal of the right thickness
  • Modelers with experience of photo-etched parts, a bender and cyanoacrylate glue
  • Builders of dioramas where a damaged fender is reckoned with

This is an accessory set, not a standalone model. The plastic kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory that replaces the fenders on an already purchased plastic kit in 1:35 scale.

Both types share the hull and the running gear, so they have an identical solution of the fenders. They differ mainly in the powerplant and the armament.

It is the close support form, which carried a 95 mm howitzer intended for fire against area targets instead of an anti-armor gun.

A scalpel or photo-etch scissors, tweezers, a hard surface and ideally a bender. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue.
