A photo-etched detail set from the Czech maker Eduard for a model of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid in 1:350 scale. The designation in the name says that this is the fourth part of a multi-part range — the individual parts are sold separately and each covers a different area of the ship. Photo-etched sheet is practically indispensable on ship models in this scale: railings, ladders, nets and platforms would be an order of magnitude thicker in injection-molded plastic than reality warrants. The plastic model is not included in the package.
USS Intrepid was an Essex class aircraft carrier, that is of the type that formed the backbone of American carrier aviation in the 1940s and in modified form served long afterwards. Ships of this class had a flat flight deck, an island superstructure on the starboard side, elevators for moving aircraft between decks and extensive galleries with armament around the edge of the deck. It is precisely these perimeter walkways, railings and safety nets that make a model convincing — and they are at the same time what cannot be made from plastic.
Work with ship photo-etched parts section by section: first glue and paint the basic areas, and only then add the railings. Bend long strips of railing in a bender in short lengths and keep trying them dry, so that they follow the curve of the deck. Degrease the sheet with alcohol and glue with cyanoacrylate in minute drops applied with a pin. Once they are glued on, apply a primer for metals and spray the paint in thin coats, so that the structure of the nets does not clog. A finished model is fragile — reckon with a display case and with handling it by the base rather than by the deck.
This is an accessory set, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
