Flyhawk 1:350 detail set, USS Indianapolis CA-35

An extensive accessory for ship modelers in 1:350 scale from Flyhawk. The set replaces the plastic parts of a model of the American heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis with finer components: railings, ladders, nets, radars and other thin structures that injection-molded plastic cannot capture faithfully. It is cut for one particular kit of this cruiser, so it may not line up on another model. The ship kit is not included in the package.

The real subject

USS Indianapolis is known above all for her end. In July 1945 she carried components of a nuclear weapon to Tinian and on the return voyage she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. The ship sank within a few minutes, her distress call was not picked up and hundreds of men spent several days in the sea before they were found by chance. It was the greatest loss of life on a single ship in the history of the US Navy.

Use

• cut the parts from the fret with a sharp knife on a hard surface; do not break them out
• make the bends over a metal ruler or in a photo-etch bender
• glue with super glue applied with the tip of a wire
• degrease the metal before painting and give it a primer for metal
• work from the inner parts outwards, otherwise you will break off finished parts

The set is intended for experienced modelers and fitting it takes tens of hours. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
