About product

AMP 1:48 American Helicopter XH-26 Jet Jeep, a plastic kit

A kit of the experimental single-seat XH-26 Jet Jeep helicopter in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer AMP. It is a new mold from the end of the second decade of this century. The real machine was very small, so the finished model measures roughly seven and a half centimeters; it is a small but unconventional piece for a rotorcraft collection. In the package there are sprues of injection-molded plastic, decals and instructions.

The real subject

The XH-26 Jet Jeep was developed by the American Helicopter Company from 1951 under contract to the US Army and the US Air Force. The peculiarity of the design was the drive of the rotor by jets placed at the blade tips, thanks to which the machine needed neither a gearbox nor the anti-torque system usual in a classic layout. The fuselage was aluminum, the rear section fiberglass, and the cabin was formed by a glazed pyramidal canopy. The first of five prototypes flew in January 1952. The machine was meant to be light, able to be dismantled and transportable in a container, but it never reached series production.

Building and painting tips

The model is small and has delicate parts, above all the supporting structure of the rotor and the landing gear; work with a sharp cutter and tweezers and try the parts dry. The cabin glazing is a large visible surface, so give it time: polish the clear part, mask it with narrow tape and glue it with cement for clear parts, which does not fog them. Given the simple finish of the real machine it is worth working properly on the base, as unevenness stands out on a smooth surface. Let the rotor blades cure flat.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of experimental and prototype aircraft
  • those interested in early helicopters and unconventional drive concepts
  • modelers with experience of short-run molds and small parts
  • those looking for a small model with a story for the display case

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The rotor was driven by jets at the blade tips. The machine therefore needed neither a gearbox nor the anti-torque system usual in an ordinary layout with a tail rotor.

The real machine was very small, so even in 1:48 scale the model measures only around seven and a half centimeters. It takes up a minimum of space in a display case.

The parts are delicate, especially the supporting structure of the rotor and the landing gear. We recommend a sharp cutter, tweezers and trying things dry as you go.

No. Five prototypes were built and the first flew in January 1952. The machine never reached series production.
