The G-4 version stands in the middle of the Gustav's development. Unlike the G-1 and G-3 it was built without a pressurized cabin, so it lacks the characteristic round windows in the side panels and it has no drying cartridges against misting either. From the outside it is given away by the larger main wheels, on account of which prominent bulges had to appear on the upper surface of the wing. It flew mainly in 1943, in the east and over the Mediterranean.
The most conspicuous element inside the cockpit is the back covered in steel. Behind the seat stands a vertical armor plate and above it, at head height, a second horizontally angled part with a cut-out outline. On the G-4 it is still the original heavy version, because the lighter glazed frame appeared only on the later machines. It is that plate which forms the background of every cockpit photograph.
The headrest and the plate are dark and the glazing frames above them have the same gray-blue tone inside. When the frame is left in the color of the plastic, it blends with its surroundings differently from the way it should and the armor behind the pilot loses its contrast. A mask for the inner side makes it possible to spray that tone evenly right into the corners, which a brush reaches only with difficulty.
It is worth mentioning how that small thing shows in the result. The glass is transparent in both directions, so the viewer follows the interior through two layers of paint and any mismatch between them is visible as a milky veil. A sharp division at the edge of a bar, by contrast, convinces the eye that it is looking through a real window into a real machine, and that is in fact the whole point of working with glazing.
