A small but conspicuously effective accessory: a set of photo-etched cooling grilles, cut for the Tamiya kit. It is not a model nor a complete detail set but a targeted replacement of one prominent place on the vehicle. The grille is, after all, exactly the part on which plastic can be recognized at first glance.
A real cooling grille is of thin sheet and it is see-through: light passes through it and behind it you sense the space of the engine. Injection-molded plastic cannot imitate that, so manufacturers only suggest the grille by engraving into a solid surface. The result reads as a blind plate and above all it has no depth. A photo-etched part has real holes, so once glued on there is darkness beneath it and the surface gains volume at once. On a vehicle with a central engine, such as the Universal Carrier, this area is moreover plainly on view.
The original plastic grille usually has to be leveled flat: sand the surface smooth with abrasive on a flat piece of wood, so that the photo-etched part seats over its whole area. Do not glue the photo-etched part onto glue applied to the part itself, but wipe a drop of cyanoacrylate onto the tip of a wire and transfer it only to the edges; otherwise the glue will run into the holes and blind the grille. Degrease the metal before gluing and spray on a primer once it is glued. When painting, spray in short, thin passes from a greater distance, as a thick coat of paint will flood the holes just as reliably as glue. It is advisable to blacken the space under the grille beforehand.
