The carrier-based Hornet has a markedly blown one-piece canopy, which on a model is hard to replace with anything but a clear part. This item offers such a canopy in 1:48 scale for the single-seat F/A-18A version and makes it possible to show the instrument panel and the ejection seat.
The F/A-18A entered service with the US Navy and the Marine Corps in 1983 as the first production single-seat version. It replaced both the fighter and the attack types of the previous generation at once, which is reflected in the designation of the aircraft itself. Digital avionics and fly-by-wire controls made it easy to handle on the deck of a carrier and the basis for the whole later Hornet family. The canted vertical tails and the leading-edge extensions are characteristic.
Modern canopies have large undivided surfaces where every scratch shows, so lay the part on a soft pad while working on it. The framing is narrow and it is worth using tape cut with a knife along a metal ruler. The slid-back position calls for a carefully finished cockpit area, side consoles included.
What is supplied is the canopy alone. The Hornet kit and the modeling chemicals have to be added.
