The package holds waterslide decals for a model of the F-5E Tiger II in 1:48 scale in the colors of the Royal Thai Air Force. It is not a kit — you obtain the model separately and this sheet gives it its markings. The word late in the title relates to the later period of the type's operation, when with a number of air forces both the finishes and the form of the national insignia and lettering changed.
The F-5E is a single-seat light supersonic fighter powered by two General Electric J85 engines with afterburners. It came about as a more capable successor to the F-5A with a revised wing and an onboard radar. Its strength lay in small dimensions, low operating demands and easy maintenance in field conditions, which made it the typical aircraft of smaller air forces. In the later years of service the machines went through avionics upgrades and changed their finishes from high-contrast camouflage schemes to more restrained gray combinations matching the shift in their duties.
Late schemes tend to be gray and less contrasting, and any mistake in application stands out on them all the more. So polish the surface underneath and spray it with gloss clear, or the edges of the carrier film will give themselves away by a reflection. Apply small lettering and technical markings only after the large insignia, when you are sure of the layout. A damp brush with a fine tip, with which you press the decal into place, will help, and so will a paper towel to draw the excess water from under the film. When a decal dries crooked, do not try to tear it off dry — moisten it and lift it carefully with the point of a scalpel. A uniform clear coat comes last, ideally matte or semi-gloss, which unifies the whole surface.
