A set of self-adhesive masking templates in 1:48 scale for models of the single-engine F-35A Lightning II combat aircraft. According to the name the set covers the cockpit canopy and the wheel hubs; it is not a kit, but an accessory for the painting stage. The templates are lifted with tweezers straight from the sheet, and nothing is cut out. Furball Aero-Design is an American maker of accessories focused on the modern tactical and carrier aviation of the United States.
The F-35A is the land-based variant of the Lightning II family, with a conventional takeoff and landing. It differs from the carrier versions above all in the design of its landing gear, in the absence of folding wingtips and in its internal gun. The airframe has a faceted shape and smooth transitions between surfaces, which are subordinated to a low radar signature. The cockpit canopy is one-piece and markedly domed, and the wheel hubs have a simple shape with no covers — so both areas call for accuracy rather than complex layering of shades when painting.
Wheel hubs are often underestimated, and yet it is precisely there that the result is most visible. Apply the mask to the center of the hub, press the edge down with a toothpick and spray the tire in a dark shade; take the mask off only after it has dried and clean up any overrun with a toothpick and a drop of water. Hold the wheel by its axle, not by the tread. On the cockpit the usual order applies: the interior shade on the frames first, then the outer color. Gray low-visibility finishes are prone to uneven coverage, so spray thinly and let each coat dry.
This is an add-on set for a kit you already own. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
