The Eduard 1:48 resin M118 bomb adds a heavy American-made demolition bomb to a model of a combat aircraft as an accurate casting. An accessory to a model, not a kit of the aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
A heavy bomb is a prominent item on a model: in 1:48 scale it measures a good size and draws attention to the store and to the whole configuration. That is precisely why it pays to replace the plastic part with a resin casting. It has no lengthwise seam running across the whole body, it preserves the fine surface relief, the bands, the lugs and the shape of the stabilizing surfaces, and once painted it reads as a piece of metal rather than as two halves glued together. The set is made by the Czech firm Eduard.
The M118 was an American heavy demolition aircraft bomb of the heaviest routinely carried class, used from the 1960s. In shape it differed from the classic Mk 80 series: it had a sturdier, less aerodynamically slender body, because it was created for release at lower speeds and against targets calling for great destructive force, for example bridges and fortified structures. It also served as the basis for guided variants, on whose body a laser guidance kit was mounted. In period photographs it appears with machines of the US Air Force as well as of the Navy.
Before painting, wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water: mold release agent otherwise prevents the paint from adhering. Cut the casting block off with a saw, level the surface on sanding paper on glass and fill any bubbles. The stabilizing surfaces are thin and fragile, so handle them carefully. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Start the painting with a primer, then the base shade, and create the colored stripes with masking rather than with a brush; a hand-drawn stroke is always apparent in this scale. A wash into the engraved lines and faint dust on the lower part help at the end, so that the bomb fits into the overall weathering of the model.
This is an accessory, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
