An accessory set, not an airplane kit. It consists of a vacuum-formed clear canopy and painting masks for the canopy frames in 1:48 scale. It replaces the injection-molded canopy from the base kit with a thinner and cleaner part and adds masks that make painting the frames easier. Working with a vacuum-formed part calls for precision, so the set is aimed at more experienced modelers.
The Ki-27 is one of those aircraft with a long, strongly glazed canopy where the thickness of the material shows at first glance. A thin vacuum-formed part rids the model of optical distortion and allows the canopy to be opened without the edge looking like a heavy wall. The masks supplied then take the place of tedious tape cutting and make sure the frames come out with sharp edges and with no paint running underneath.
Plan the whole procedure first: vacuum-formed parts are a one-shot job, so it pays to work slowly. Mark the parting line with a fine marker, cut the part out roughly with a margin and only then sand the edge down gradually on flat abrasive paper laid on a level board until the part seats exactly into the fuselage. The inside of the glazing is easier to finish before gluing — do any painting of the frames from the inside now. It is glued with a canopy glue that does not fog as it cures; liquid cyanoacrylate glue would cloud a clear part. Apply the masks to a degreased surface, press them down with a toothpick and lay the paint on in several light coats. Lift the mask while the paint is freshly dry, not a week later — by then it can tear the edge of the finish away.
