Glazing and insignia masks for the P-40K model in 1:48 scale, completed by six turned brass barrels.
Responsibility details are not available.
The P-40K came about as a response to the need for higher performance near the ground. It received a more powerful Allison engine and with it more torque, which swung the machine on takeoff. On later batches the designers therefore lengthened the rear fuselage and enlarged the fin. It was flown by units in China carrying on from the famous Flying Tigers and by Soviet pilots, to whom these machines came under deliveries from the United States.
The package mixes two things together. The first are self-adhesive masks: the glazing outside and inside plus one national insignia mask for spraying. The second is a set of six brass barrels for the wing machine guns.
Why metal barrels: injection-molded plastic always has a parting line on a thin tube and the muzzle is usually blind. A turned metal part has thin walls, a muzzle that really is drilled, and it does not deform while being cleaned up. It is enough to cut off the plastic originals, drill a hole and glue the barrels in with super glue.
The metal can moreover be left in its natural color or darkened slightly with a bluing solution, which gives a shade that is hard to reach by spraying silver on plastic.
The sequence is obvious: the masks and the camouflage coat first, the barrels at the very end, so that they do not get bent during handling. The aircraft model has to be obtained separately; the set is built around the parts of one particular kit. Keep the plastic barrels you cut off, as they serve as a gauge for drilling the holes to the right depth.
