About product

P-51D Mustang in 1:48 scale (Monogram)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the best known version of the American Second World War fighter in the traditional modeling scale of 1:48. It is a classic American Monogram mold and among the longest offered Mustangs of all. The kit is built more for atmosphere and for playing with than for the maximum of engraved internal structure: it offers an opening engine panel and access to the gun bay in the wing, so the model can be displayed with parts of the airframe exposed. The box holds plastic sprues, clear parts and decals for American machines, each with a distinctive recognition marking of its own on the nose.

The real subject

The P-51D was the most widespread version of the Mustang family and the one that gave the type its reputation as a long-range escort fighter. You can tell it from the earlier versions by the bubble canopy and the cut-down rear fuselage, which radically improved the pilot's view to the rear. Power came from the V12 Merlin engine in the version built under license in the United States, and the combination of an aerodynamically clean airframe and a laminar-flow wing section gave the machine the endurance it needed. Mustangs escorted bomber formations over Europe, operated in the Pacific as well and after the war served in many countries for years to come.

Building and painting tips

The mold is an older one, so expect the parts to need a little filling and sanding, above all at the wing root and around the radiator fairing. Glue with thin cement for plastic. If you want to make use of the opening panels, leave yourself room to paint the engine and the gun bay before the fuselage is closed up. The natural metal finish typical of late Mustangs calls for a perfectly smooth and grease-free surface: lay on a gloss black or gray base, then the metallic paint, and do not over-polish it afterward. The metallic pigment settles at the bottom, so stir the paint thoroughly before spraying and lay it on at the end of the build, because it is hard to mask and to spray over. Place the decals on a gloss varnish and settle them with a decal softener.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American Second World War fighters in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want a model with the engine and armament panels exposed
  • Anyone interested in classic molds with a long history
  • Builders who want to try a natural metal finish

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
