The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet single-seat fighter and something of a sensation in its day: a monoplane with retractable landing gear at a time when most fighters still flew as biplanes on fixed wheels. Its fuselage was short and barrel-like, with a radial engine at the front, and the machine was famous for its agility as well as for how mercilessly it punished mistakes in flying. The nickname Rata, which also appears in the name of the set, was given to it by the opposing side in the Spanish Civil War.
A set of decals for I-16 models in 1:48 scale. On this particular aircraft the markings are half the result: the machines carried bold red stars, numbers and often personal emblems on a short fuselage where everything shows. Which particular machines the sheet covers and how many there are is given in the instructions supplied with the set.
The surface under the decal should be smooth, glossy and free of grease; on a matte surface a white haze forms under the film. Cut the decal out close to the printing, soak it briefly and let it stand until it can be slid on the backing paper. Transfer it onto the model, push the water out with a soft cloth and let it dry completely. Over rivets and panel lines a decal softener helps, drawing the film down to the surface. Finally go over the finished markings with varnish so that the edge of the film disappears.
What is supplied is the decal sheet on its own. The model, the paints, the varnish and the decal softener are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
