An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat F-14D carrier fighter in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Great Wall Hobby. The brand has made its name with fine recessed engraving of the surface and a density of detail that is not a matter of course in a smaller scale. The boxing is listed as a limited edition with the markings of the VF-31 squadron; please check the particular make-up of the contents, that is whether supplementary sprues, photo-etched parts or masks are enclosed, in the instructions, because with limited editions it differs between individual runs.
The F-14D was the last production version of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, a machine with variable wing geometry, a crew of two and a load-bearing structure designed for operation from aircraft carriers. Compared with the older versions it received new General Electric F110 engines, digital avionics and upgraded equipment for target acquisition. The VF-31 squadron was among the last units of the US Navy to operate the type before it was withdrawn from operational service; the commemorative finish the edition is named after is connected with this final stage.
Work from the back forwards: the cockpit, the instrument panels and the nose gear bay are closed in between the fuselage halves, so paint them and glue them in once dry before you join the fuselage. With the variable-geometry wings, check dry that both halves sweep symmetrically, and only then fix the pivots. Low-visibility gray camouflage stands out when you preshade the surface and differentiate the individual panels slightly in shade; apply the decals onto a gloss clear coat and unify the whole with a matte or satin overcoat. Choose the external stores and the tanks according to the scheme you are building, not according to what fits on the pylons.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
