A figure in cast resin from the Polish maker Toro Model. It depicts a member of the Polish Home Defence, the territorial units that supplemented the regular army in the autumn of 1939. According to the manufacturer's catalog it is one figure. It is not a kit of a piece of equipment but a diorama addition. The casting is supplied unpainted and with casting blocks that have to be removed before building.
The Home Defence units were formed in the second half of the 1930s from local reservists and carried out mainly guard and security duties. In the field they differed from regular infantry above all in how well they were equipped: some of the gear was of older origin and what individual soldiers carried was not so uniform. That lack of uniformity is exactly what benefits the modeler: a figure standing beside a standard infantryman varies the scene and makes it more believable than a pair of identically equipped figures.
Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or nippers, sand the parting lines wet and protect your breathing. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue and lay on a thin primer before painting. The subject benefits from a uniform that is not quite new: slightly faded surfaces, darker folds and hinted wear at the elbows and knees look convincing. Dirty the boots and the lower trouser legs with pigments to match the terrain the figure will stand on, so that it fits into the base. Finally unify the surface with a matte varnish.
The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
