A resin figure from the Polish maker Toro Model, from the range devoted to the year 1939. It depicts a member of the Riverine Flotilla of the Polish Navy, a formation that operated on inland waterways rather than at sea. According to the manufacturer's catalog it is one figure. It is not a kit of a vessel but a diorama addition; the casting is supplied unpainted and with casting blocks to be removed.
The Riverine Flotilla of the Polish Navy was a branch of its own with its own monitors, gunboats and auxiliary craft, which operated in the basin of the eastern rivers. The personnel wore a naval uniform that differed from the ground infantry in cut, in headgear and in the way the gear was carried, and that very difference is what makes the figure interesting in a diorama. In the finished scene it works well at a landing stage, by a bridge, on a riverbank or together with ground equipment, where the different uniform tells at a glance which formation is meant.
First wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water because of the mold release residue. Cut off the casting blocks and sand the surfaces wet with respiratory protection. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue and lay on a thin primer before painting. With a naval uniform the key is working with dark shades: pure black looks flat on a small figure, so brighten it with a blue-gray cast and pick out the edges gently. The light parts of the uniform, by contrast, should be left slightly soiled so that they do not burn out on the model. Finally unify the whole with a matte varnish, leaving only the leather parts with a slight sheen.
The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
