An Armycast masking set intended for spraying Soviet red stars edged in white or yellow onto an aircraft model in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor decals. The masks are applied to finished paintwork, the insignia is sprayed and the masks are taken off, so the marking lies in the same plane as the surrounding paint. The name of the set designates the early variant of this type of insignia, which Armycast offers alongside the mid and late versions.
Outlined red stars spread on Soviet aircraft in the second half of the Second World War. The outline was meant to raise the legibility of the insignia on dark camouflage and against the background. Besides a white edging a yellow one also appeared. The individual variants differ from one another in the ratio of the width of the edging to the size of the star and in the proportions of the points, which is exactly what sets the early, mid and late sets of this range apart.
This set stands or falls on the preparation of the surface. The area must be perfectly cured, smooth and degreased — even a thin layer of dust or a fingerprint is enough for the mask not to settle at that spot and for the paint to creep under. Before applying it, go over the surface with a clean cotton cloth, or polish it very gently and wipe it. On roughly matted or grainy paintwork a mask holds considerably worse; if you have a surface like that, add a small area of smooth varnish under the insignia and mask only on top of that.
This is an accessory for a model. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
