About product

Tp 52 Canberra, a resin nose 1:48 (Maestro Models)

This set is a replacement nose section in resin for 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft, but a conversion accessory: the original nose of a plastic Canberra model is cut off and replaced with a resin casting matching the modification used in Swedish service under the designation Tp 52. Maestro Models is a Swedish brand that has long devoted itself to exactly the kind of local variants the large kit makers do not get round to.

The real subject

The English Electric Canberra was a British twin-engine jet bomber with a straight wing of large area, which came about shortly after the Second World War and, thanks to its excellent high-altitude qualities and long endurance, stayed in service in many countries for decades. Besides bombing tasks it proved itself mainly in roles that involved carrying measuring and reconnaissance apparatus. The Swedish Air Force operated the Canberra under the domestic designation Tp 52 and used it for special tasks connected with measurement and electronic equipment; the modification to the nose that this set captures went with that.

Building and painting tips

A nose conversion calls for a clean cut. First mark the place of the cut with thin tape around the fuselage, so that the cut is square, and cut with a saw rather than a knife. Wash the resin casting in lukewarm water with dish soap and remove the casting block. Attach the joint with cyanoacrylate glue and fill any gap with filler, ideally a two-part one - at the boundary between resin and plastic the filler tends to be under strain. Because the nose is heavier than the original plastic, watch the balance of the model and add weight if need be. Apply primer before painting; it will also reveal any imperfections in the sanded joint.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British jet aircraft who want a less usual version
  • Those interested in Swedish aircraft and their special machines
  • Modelers with experience of cutting a fuselage and of conversions
  • Those who want to set a model apart from the ordinary box of a kit

This is a conversion accessory, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The set contains the resin nose section only. The base plastic Canberra kit in 1:48 scale has to be bought separately.

Yes. The original nose is cut off and replaced with the resin casting. Make the cut with a saw along marked tape, so that it is square, and then fill and sand the joint.

Resin is heavier than hollow plastic, so the balance moves forward. With an aircraft that has nose gear that usually helps, but check the balance dry before cementing the fuselage.

Attach it with cyanoacrylate glue; cement for plastic does not work on resin. Apply primer before painting and only then the opaque shades.
