Figures of soldiers of the German infantry of the Second World War period in 1:48 scale. In this ratio an adult figure measures about three and a half centimeters, a size on which the face and the equipment can comfortably be painted while the figure still fits beside a model of an aircraft or a vehicle of the same scale. The number of figures and their poses are given on the packaging and in the instructions.
A model on its own has nothing to be compared with. As soon as you place a human figure beside it, the viewer immediately gauges how large the machine is and the scene gains an action: someone is carrying something, pointing at something, leaning on something. With aircraft and vehicles in 1:48 scale that works particularly well, because the difference between machine and man is legible here at a glance.
Before painting, wash the figures, let them dry and apply a thin coat of a base so that the paints hold. Work from the large areas to the small details, that is, from the uniform through the equipment to the skin and the face. Field gray reads flatter in a small scale than it does in reality, so darken it in the folds with a dark glaze and lighten the edges with dry brushing. In this scale it is better only to suggest the eyes with a dark line; painted whites look unnatural close up.
For a modeler who is building a scene or wants to add a crew to a finished model. Painting a figure is a different discipline from spraying an airframe, but it is precisely what decides whether a scene looks alive.
Paints, brushes and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
