About product

Brass micro tube 1.7 mm

A drawn brass tube with an outside diameter of 1.7 mm and an inside diameter of 1.5 mm. The wall is therefore a mere tenth of a millimeter, and even so the material keeps a stiffness a plastic rod will never have. It comes as a single piece 305 millimeters long, which covers several projects at once.

Why reach for metal

Metal takes being sanded down to a sharp edge at the muzzle, it does not ripple in heat and, once fitted to a model, it needs no filling of a parting seam. The thin wall also gives weapon muzzles and exhausts a convincingly fine edge that cannot be made from a plastic part split in two.

  • The barrels of machine guns and cannon in 1:35 to 1:48 scale
  • Antenna masts, rod supports and grab handles on a vehicle turret
  • Hydraulic and fuel lines in an engine bay
  • Collars and sleeves for thinner wire and tubes of smaller diameter

The range of sizes is graded in tenths of a millimeter, so the inside bore of 1.5 mm takes a tube of exactly the same outside diameter. That makes it possible to build telescopic assemblies with a visible step without having to sand anything down.

It can be parted with a tube cutter or with a thin saw blade with support, and the inside burr is removed after the cut with the tip of a knife. It can be held with super glue, and a stronger joint comes from soldering. Before painting it is worth degreasing the surface and using a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth brass.

FAQ

The first is the outside diameter, the second the inside bore. The difference between them gives the wall thickness, that is a tenth of a millimeter.

One piece measures 305 millimeters, that is roughly thirty centimeters. It is supplied as this single piece.

Yes. The inside bore of 1.5 mm matches the outside diameter of the next size down in the same range, so the assemblies fit together without reworking.

With a tube cutter or with a fine saw with support. Not with pliers, which squash the end into an oval.
