About product

Boat davits for Russian ships 1:700 (Metallic Details)

A photo-etched metal set of davits, that is the curved swinging arms with which boats are lowered and raised on ships. The package contains thirty-two davits in four sizes, so it will cover both the large boats on the main deck and the smaller working boats by the superstructure. The set is worked out for Russian ships, specifically for the cruisers Bayan, Pallada and Admiral Makarov, but thanks to the division into several sizes it finds use on other models from the same period too.

What the set is for

Davits are among the parts that practically cannot be molded faithfully in injection-molded plastic in 1:700 scale. A real arm is a thin steel beam, but in plastic it turns into a thick post. Photo-etched metal holds the correct cross section and has a properly slender silhouette when seen from the side. Together with the railings and the ship's boats the set thus markedly changes the overall impression of the deck. The four sizes make it possible to distinguish large lifeboats from smaller working craft on a single model, which corresponds to the real arrangement.

Fitting and painting tips

Separate the individual davits with a scalpel against a hard surface and handle them with fine-tipped tweezers, as these are very small parts. The arm is bent into a curve carefully over a cylindrical object, not by breaking it at one point. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin. Before painting, degrease the metal and treat it with a thin coat of metal primer. Choose the paint according to the coat of the rest of the ship, as davits were as a rule painted the same as the superstructure. A fine wash and lightly dry-brushed edges accent the shape of the arm.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of models of Russian ships in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who want to replace coarse plastic davits from a kit
  • More experienced enthusiasts used to working with very small photo-etched parts
  • Those who build a model for a display case or for a competition

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the model of the ship itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

The manufacturer states thirty-two davits in four sizes.

It is worked out for the Russian cruisers Bayan, Pallada and Admiral Makarov, but thanks to the four sizes it will serve on other models from the same period too.

The parts are very small, and we recommend fine-tipped tweezers and experience of photo-etched parts.
