About product

Turned metal barrels 1:700 - 38 cm SK C/34, short version (Flyhawk)

A set of turned metal barrels in 1:700 from the firm Flyhawk. It is not a model: it is a replacement part that swaps the plastic barrels of the main artillery on a model of a German battleship for accurately machined metal ones. The difference is apparent at once: metal holds a perfectly circular section, the muzzle is really drilled out and the barrel is straight, whereas injected plastic at this scale tends to be slightly oval, with a trace of the mold parting line and with a bend. The designation short type refers to the later version with shorter blast bags at the root of the barrels.

The real subject

The 38 cm SK C/34 naval gun was the main armament of the German battleships of the Bismarck class. They carried eight of these barrels in four twin turrets, two forward and two aft. The weapon was marked by a high muzzle velocity and a flat trajectory, which gave it good accuracy at long range. The same type of gun also appeared in a coastal version on several fortress batteries.

Fitting tips

Cut the plastic barrels off as close to the turret as possible and clean the hole out carefully with a drill bit to the right diameter; keep trying it dry until the metal barrel seats without force. Degrease the metal with alcohol before gluing and glue with super glue applied a drop at a time. Painting is done over a primer for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface and will rub off during handling. Fit the barrels only once the turrets are painted, ideally at the very end of the build.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German warships in 1:700
  • modelers bothered by the parting line and the blind muzzle on plastic barrels
  • more experienced modelers aiming at competition or display-case quality
  • anyone who adds further details to a model step by step

This is an accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It denotes the later version with shorter blast bags at the root of the barrels. Choose the short or the long variant according to the period you want to model.

It is not. These are replacement metal barrels for a model you already have. The base kit has to be obtained separately.

With super glue (cyanoacrylate) a small drop at a time. The hole in the turret is first cleaned out with a drill bit to the right diameter and the joint is tried dry so that the barrel seats without pressure.

Yes, otherwise the shade of the barrels differs from the rest of the model. Use a primer for metal and ordinary paint over it; without a base the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
