1:700 IJN Akitsushima: a kit of the Japanese seaplane tender for flying boats from Aoshima. An unusual support vessel with a massive stern crane, a treat for collectors of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Responsibility details are not available.
A plastic kit of the Japanese support vessel Akitsushima in 1:700 scale from the manufacturer Aoshima. A tender for flying boats is among the less usual subjects, and for exactly that reason it is a welcome change in any collection of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
The Akitsushima entered service in 1942 as a specialized tender for large four-engine flying boats, to which it provided fuel, munitions and technical support at forward bases in the Pacific. Its characteristic feature was the massive crane at the stern, with which the ship lifted flying boats out of the water onto the deck. The career of the ship was ended in September 1944 by an Allied air raid at Coron Bay in the Philippines, where it was sunk.
The dominant feature of the model is the stern crane; give it time, deburr it carefully and consider adding rigging from thin fishing line. The hull holds the dark gray shade of the Imperial Japanese Navy; draw the broken-up superstructure out with a wash and a dry brush. The model is an open invitation to a diorama: paired with a model of a flying boat in 1:700 it will create a scene from a forward base of a kind you will not see in ordinary collections.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
