An accessory for a ship kit, not a model on its own. The package holds a veneer cut-out of the decks in 1:700 scale with pre-printed seams between the planks and a self-adhesive layer. On a cruiser in this scale the work is very fine indeed, because the hull is short and the deck is densely broken up by turret bases, winches and hatches. The result, though, moves the model far closer to reality than the finest paintwork. The outline of the deck follows the Flyhawk FH1112 kit.
HMS Naiad was a British light cruiser of the Dido class, a type built around the air defense of a formation. She carried dual-purpose twin turrets of 133 mm and served above all in the Mediterranean. The figure 1940 in the name points to the configuration of the ship when she entered service, and the cut of the parts follows it.
On small hulls every deviation shows, so a dry fit is no formality. Lay the veneer on with the film still in place, check the position of every cut-out against the barbettes and winches and mark any overhang with a fine pencil. Then peel the film back only partly, anchor the veneer at the bow and work piece by piece toward the stern. Press down with a flat-ended wooden stick; a thumb would shift the veneer over so small an area. Once it has set, run over the edges and check that nothing is lifting. Finally seal the deck with matte varnish.
This is an accessory for a ship kit, not a model on its own. The kit, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
