About product

A detail set for the destroyer Amagiri 1943 in 1:700 scale

This is an add-on set from the maker Tetra Model Works intended to sharpen a plastic kit of the Japanese destroyer Amagiri in 1:700 scale. The set is neither a ship model nor a kit; it completes a kit you have already bought. On ship models in 1:700 scale photo-etch is practically indispensable: railings, ladders, platforms, antennas and girders are tenths of a millimeter thick in reality, so injection-molded plastic cannot produce them at all, or only as a markedly thickened suggestion. The exact contents of the package are given by the maker on the packaging. According to the name, the intended kit is Yamashita Hobby.

The real subject

The Amagiri was a Japanese destroyer of the Fubuki class, that is of a type that at the time it came about was among the most heavily armed destroyers in the world. The armament consisted of 12.7 cm guns in enclosed mounts and torpedo tubes for large-caliber torpedoes. The designation of the year 1943 in the title refers to a particular state of the ship during the war, when the make-up of the antiaircraft armament of Japanese destroyers was gradually changed and radar equipment was added. They were used above all in the southwest Pacific for fast night movements and supply runs.

Building and painting tips

Glue the railings on only after the deck has been painted, or you will clog the fine stanchions while painting. Anneal metal railings slightly over a flame first and let them cool; the metal softens and will follow the curves of the sides better. For gluing, use a minimum of superglue carried over on a wire; excess on the deck yellows and shows. Painting is best done with an airbrush in the deck shade, or with a fine brush once it has dried. At the end it pays to dust the ship model lightly with a very thin light shade, which unifies the metal with the plastic.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of ship models in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who want railings, ladders and platforms thin for the scale
  • Owners of the matching kit of a Fubuki class destroyer
  • More experienced modelers used to working with very fine photo-etch

The add-on set is supplied unpainted, with no glue and no base kit. Verify before buying that the set matches the kit you own.

FAQ

It is not. This is an add-on detail set for a plastic kit in 1:700 scale, which has to be bought separately.

In 1:700 scale, railings, ladders and antennas have a thickness that injection-molded plastic cannot manage. Metal is the only realistic route here.

Anneal the brass briefly over a flame and let it cool. The softened metal then follows the curve without breaking.

It designates a particular state of the ship in that year. The equipment of Japanese destroyers changed during the war, and the set matches one period.
