About product

The heavy cruiser Suzuya 1942 in 1:700 scale from Fujimi

This kit from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi captures the heavy cruiser Suzuya, the third ship of the Mogami class, in her 1942 configuration. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread for ship models: the finished model fits into an ordinary cabinet and can be lined up with her sister ships. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the treatment of the hull are stated on the box; check them against the description on the packaging.

The real subject

Suzuya was one of the quartet of Japanese Mogami class cruisers from the 1930s. The ships were designed with 15.5 cm guns in triple turrets because of the treaty limits for light cruisers, and before the war they were rearmed with 20.3 cm guns in twin turrets. Their equipment included torpedo armament and catapults for reconnaissance floatplanes aft. The 1942 appearance corresponds to the early stage of the war in the Pacific, when the ships did not yet have the extensive later additions of anti-aircraft armament and radar equipment that they carried in 1944.

Building and painting tips

Sand and if necessary fill the hull and the decks before you fit the superstructures; afterwards the seams are hard to reach. Glue small parts such as the gun barrels, the cranes and the catapults with thin cement for plastic applied with a fine brush, as a thick gel floods small surfaces. The painting procedure: a gray base on the hull and the superstructures, a different shade on the deck, a thin wash into the recesses and a gentle dry brush on the edges. Photo-etched railings and rigging are not included in the package, but they raise the result more than any other accessory. Decide beforehand whether you will build the model with a full hull on a base or at the waterline on a water surface.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of the Japanese wartime fleet in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who build ships at a particular point in time, here the year 1942
  • More experienced builders used to the small parts of ship kits
  • Rounding out a collection of Mogami class cruisers in a single scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
