The model in the classic ship scale of 1:700 captures the Chinese Type 071 class amphibious transport dock. It is injection-molded in polystyrene and is supplied unassembled and unpainted. For large warships 1:700 is the most common choice: the finished model has reasonable dimensions for a display case and at the same time carries a fair amount of detail. Whether the package holds the full hull or a waterline version, and possibly a stand and photo-etched parts, is stated on the box and in the instructions.
An amphibious transport dock is a type of amphibious unit that combines transport capacity for troops and vehicles with the ability to launch landing craft straight from an internal floodable dock in the stern. On the upper deck there is usually an area for helicopter operations and a hangar. For the PLA Navy the Type 071 class represents a significant step in building the ability to move units by sea over greater distances. A large smooth superstructure with features reducing radar signature and a long open deck in the after part are characteristic of it.
With ships in this scale, decide right at the start whether you are building a full hull on a stand or a waterline model set into the surface of the water. Spray the hull and the decks separately while they are easily accessible, and only then join them. Glue the small parts of the superstructures and the armament with tweezers and super glue; with photo-etched railings, if you use them, fold the parts before painting. Liven up the decks with a fine difference of shade against the hull and use a discreet wash, as heavy weathering looks unconvincing at a small scale. The water surface can be made from acrylic gel on a board and the model set into it only once it is finished.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
