Artwox Model offers this set in the variant with a blue deck. According to the name it contains an adhesive wooden deck, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts, cut for the specific Meng PS004 kit. The ship model is not included; the veneer is glued onto its plastic deck part.
A blue shade on the deck surface changes the overall effect of the model. The contrast between the deck and the gray side is lower than with natural wood, so the model reads as more of a piece, but at the same time it swallows detail more readily. The practical consequence is simple: there is no point overdoing the accentuation of individual planks on the blue version, and restrained work with the edges and with the shadows around the superstructure works better.
Degrease the base and clear it of flash, otherwise the veneer will stand away at the edges. Uncover the film in sections and lay it from the centerline out to the sides, pressing with a soft cloth. Trim around the turrets and the superstructure with a fresh blade; a blunt knife frays the edge of the veneer. Treat the patina with care: on a darker surface every step shows more strongly than the modeler expects. A sealing coat of matte varnish unifies the whole surface and protects it from getting dirty during the later steps of the build.
