About product

The Mk XIX cannon of 6-inch caliber with a British crew, 1:72 scale

The package belongs to the artillery line of the manufacturer Strelets-R, which combines a model of a weapon with figures of its crew. It is therefore neither a pure set of figures nor a standalone kit of hardware, but a complete basis for one artillery position. The gun is assembled from several parts and the figures are one-piece castings in working poses. Everything is of soft plastic, in 1:72 scale and unpainted.

The real subject

The designation Mk XIX refers to a British cannon of 6-inch caliber, that is, a heavy artillery weapon with a long barrel intended for fire at long range. The design came about back in the period of the First World War, but it stayed in service in the following conflict as well, which corresponds to the dating in the name of the set. A characteristic feature is the long barrel with a balanced mounting and a robust carriage with large wheels.

Building and painting tips

The main pitfall of this set is the material: soft plastic cuts well, but glues less well and sands less well. Clean the joints up with a scalpel, therefore, not with a file, and glue with cyanoacrylate or two-part epoxy. The long barrel tends to bend during storage; you will straighten it by immersing it in hot water and cooling it in a straight position, best of all by laying it against a ruler. Before painting, wash everything in lukewarm water with detergent and apply primer, otherwise the paint will chip off on the bends. A uniform matte base suits the carriage, into which a dark glaze is then flowed, and you will bring the edges to life with a dry brush. For the conviction of the position, leave the traces of wear concentrated where they really form: around the trail, on the wheels, on the bottom of the shield and on the handles, not evenly over the whole surface.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building artillery positions in 1:72 scale
  • builders of dioramas with a focus on British units
  • collectors of artillery hardware in a small scale
  • players of tabletop war games who need a gun with a crew

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and terrain material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the name it is the gun and figures of the crew. The particular counts of parts and figures are stated on the packaging.

Immerse it in hot water for a few seconds, straighten it flat, for example by laying it against a ruler, and let it cool. The material will keep the new position.

Cement for polystyrene works on the principle of melting the surface. The soft plastic of these sets does not react to it, which is why cyanoacrylate or two-part epoxy is used.

Yes, the scale corresponds to ordinary kits of vehicles and to figures of this size, so the gun can be set into an existing scene.
