A basic masking set from the Czech maker New Ware for the model of the two-seat MiG-25 in 1:72 scale. The package does not contain a kit; it is an accessory for painting. The Basic release is the simplest of the trio Basic, Advanced and Expert, which differ from one another in the extent of coverage. The specific list of masked areas and the number of masks on the sheet are given in the instructions with the set.
The MiG-25 is a twin-engine aircraft designed for very high speeds and altitudes, with a characteristic angular fuselage, side air intakes and a pair of vertical tail surfaces. The version with the designation RU is a two-seat trainer modification derived from the reconnaissance branch of the type, on which a second cockpit was added, placed ahead of the original one. It is precisely this element that changes the shape of the upper part of the nose and with it the extent of the glazing that is masked on the model, which is why the masks for the two-seat version differ from the masks for the single-seat variants.
Kabuki paper is a thin Japanese paper with a low-tack adhesive. It adheres enough to hold an edge, but not so much that on removal it tears off paint or fogs the glazing. Before sticking it down, degrease and dry the glazing; even slight grease from the fingers is enough for a mask to stand off along the edge. A two-seat cockpit means two sets of curves close to each other, so lay the masks out on a surface in advance and assign them to the individual panels, so that they do not get mixed up during application. Apply the paint perpendicularly to the edge of the mask, not at an angle under it; that lowers the risk of running underneath. After spraying, remove the masks while the paint is still only tacky.
This is a masking set, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
