An injection-molded plastic kit of the Mustang III fighter in 1:72 scale from the Polish brand Hobby 2000. The release is themed around machines in British service over Europe. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
Mustang III was the British designation of the North American P-51B and P-51C fighter, that is the versions with the Merlin engine built under license by Packard. It was precisely the change from the original American engine to the Merlin that turned the Mustang into a genuinely capable fighter, one whose long range let it escort bomber formations deep over the continent. Machines in British service were often recognizable by the bulged sliding canopy, which markedly improved the view out of the otherwise cramped framed canopy. Besides escort duties, the Mustang III was also used for fighter and reconnaissance sorties over western Europe.
In 1:72 scale clean work is the key. The fuselage joints and the wing leading edges need only a minimum of filler, but careful sanding and the restoration of the engraved lines with a scriber. Prepare the cockpit and mask the glazing before you start spraying; on small canopies a cut mask or narrow strips of tape work well. Build British day schemes on the upper surfaces from the lighter shade to the darker one with a soft transition, and spray the underside separately. Apply a smooth gloss clear coat before the decals, otherwise silvering will appear along their edges on a matte surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
