About product

Photo-etched side skirts for the PzKpfw IV Ausf. G and the early Brummbär 1:72 — Aber

A photo-etched metal set in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is a detail accessory, not a kit: it replaces the plastic side skirts, that is the protective plates hung along the sides of the hull. The set is cut for the Panzer IV medium tank in the Ausf. G version and for the early version of the Brummbär assault gun, which shared the same arrangement of hangers.

The real subject

The side skirts, Schürzen in German, were fitted to German vehicles from 1943 as protection for the thin sides against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge ammunition. The Panzer IV Ausf. G was one of the first versions to carry them as standard. The Brummbär, officially the Sturmpanzer IV, was built on the same chassis as a heavily armored assault gun with a 150 mm howitzer meant for fighting in built-up areas, and the early batch used identical hangers for the plates.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard mat and never break them out by twisting. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two steel rulers. A natural look comes from bending the individual plates slightly, and you can leave one or two out altogether, because they were commonly lost in the field. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue; on the hangers a small drop of two-part epoxy holds better. Degrease the metal before painting and use a base coat intended for metals, and only then acrylic or enamel, followed by a wash and pigments.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German vehicle models in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers building the Panzer IV in the Ausf. G version or the early Brummbär
  • Anyone interested in realistic bends and missing plates
  • Modelers with basic experience of working with photo-etch

This is a detail accessory, not a complete kit of a vehicle. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

For the Panzer IV medium tank in the Ausf. G version and for the early version of the Brummbär assault gun on the same chassis.

No, it is a photo-etched metal set of side skirts that you fit to a model you are already building.

A sharp scalpel, tweezers, cyanoacrylate glue and ideally a photo-etch bending tool. Without one, two steel rulers will do.

Yes. Degrease the metal first and lay down a base coat intended for metals. Only on that will acrylic and enamel paint hold; otherwise it wipes off while the model is handled.
