This kit depicts one of the first production rescue and liaison helicopters of American manufacture in 1:72 scale. It is a new tooling from the manufacturer AMP; the package is made up of injection-molded plastic parts supplemented by small metal and photo-etched elements. With its more demanding joints and fine breakdown it belongs rather in the hands of an advanced builder. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Sikorsky S-51, listed with the air force as the H-5, was at the beginning of the 1950s one of the first helicopters put into real service. It made its name above all in the role of a rescue machine for evacuating the wounded and picking up downed pilots, among other places during the Korean War. Characteristic of it are the glazed forward cabin, a lattice tail boom and a three-blade main rotor. The H-5G version was fitted with a rescue winch and further equipment for search and rescue tasks.
The cabin glazing is dominant, so careful masking and applying the finish with an airbrush pay off. Glue the thin parts of the lattice structure and the rotor with liquid cement for plastic in small amounts. A filler primer that evens out the surface of the plastic and the metal parts is recommended before painting. Metal surfaces and transitions are brought out with a fine wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
