An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet long-range bomber Tupolev Tu-22M in the M2 version, NATO reporting name Backfire-B, in 1:72 scale from Trumpeter. It is a large and richly equipped kit with variable-geometry wings. You can recognize the M2 version by the air intakes with flat side walls, similar to those of the F-4 Phantom, and by the drooped nose section. The box holds clear parts for the canopy glazing, separate entry hatches and a wide choice of external weapons. Check the exact package contents and the number of marking options against the manufacturer's part number for this item.
The Tu-22M is a Soviet supersonic long-range bomber and missile carrier with a variable-geometry wing, which allows slow flight with the wings spread and fast penetration in the swept position. It was powered by a pair of powerful engines and was designed to carry anti-ship and strike missiles as well as bombs. The Tu-22M2 version was one of the first production variants and still had equipment for air-to-air refueling. The type formed an important part of the Soviet strike forces and serves in further versions to this day.
Cut the parts off the sprues and glue them with liquid cement for plastic. Paint and pick out the cockpit before closing the fuselage, and mask the clear parts while spraying. On a model this large, take care to join the fuselage parts firmly and squarely and watch the mechanism of the variable-geometry wings. Apply a primer and the colors with an airbrush, apply the decals over a gloss coat and pick out the extensive panel lines with a wash. Assemble and finish the missiles and bombs at the end.
