About product

Wellington GR Mk.VIII — the bomb bay in 1:72 scale

Thanks to the geodetic structure of its fuselage, the Vickers Wellington had interior spaces formed by a dense web of lattice elements. A structure like that is exactly what injected plastic cannot manage in a small scale and photo-etched metal can. This set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard is intended for the detailed completion of the bomb bay of a model in 1:72 scale and is one of the more extensive items in the range. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for a kit you have already bought; the kit the set is intended for is given on the packaging.

The real subject

The Wellington was a British twin-engine aircraft with a characteristic geodetic framework covered with fabric, which stood up to considerable damage. The GR designation belonged to machines used for maritime patrol; the Mk.VIII version was fitted with radar for finding targets on the surface and some machines also carried a powerful searchlight under the fuselage. The interior spaces of these aircraft differed from the bomber versions in their equipment, which is reflected in the shape of the bay as well.

Building and painting tips

The set belongs to the category where it pays to work to a plan: in 1:72 scale the parts are very tiny and the order in which they are fitted is crucial. Work over a mat with a raised edge so that parts flying off do not disappear on you. Make the bends with flat-jawed tweezers and glue with the minimum of thin cyanoacrylate glue. Deal with the painting in sections before the fuselage is closed: primer, the interior shade, a dark wash into the structure and a gentle highlighting of the edges. The lattice structure stands out most under side lighting, so it pays not to spare the contrast.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British twin-engine aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want to show the internal structure of the fuselage
  • Experienced builders used to tiny photo-etched parts
  • Competition models with open spaces

This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. These are photo-etched parts for completing the bomb bay. The plastic kit in 1:72 scale has to be bought separately.

The Wellington had a geodetic lattice fuselage structure, so the interior space is made up of a great many tiny elements.

In 1:72 scale this is very fine work. We recommend it only once you have experience with simpler photo-etched sets.
