The motif is the operational surface of the station with the division of the paving and the coloring it really has. The years given are a guide for choosing a model: the base will fit machines that belonged at the station within this stretch of time and will not contradict the vintage of the kit.
In 1:72 scale models are roughly a third shorter than in 1:48, and the base shrinks in the same proportion: a side of 450 mm instead of 675 mm. The practical consequence is that two 1:72 sheets laid side by side take up 900 mm, still less than a single wide base in 1:48 measures. A collection in 1:72 can therefore be developed piece by piece: you start with one square under one model and add another in time, with all the bases in the same scale sharing a height of 450 mm, so the edges line up.
