This kit from the Taiwanese brand AFV Club brings together two things that belong to each other: the LCT Mk.6 landing craft and a set of landing vehicles in 1:350 scale. According to the name it is the version in the service of the navy of the Republic of China, that is Taiwan, which operated these craft of American origin long after the Second World War. Check the exact contents of the package, the number of parts and the mix of vehicles on the box; the set holds both the craft and the equipment.
The LCT, that is the Landing Craft Tank, was a flat-bottomed landing craft with a hinged bow ramp, intended to put tanks and vehicles ashore straight onto a beach. The Mark 6 version was one of the most widespread and was built in the United States in large series; after the war many of them went on serving with allied navies, supplying islands and moving equipment. A craft like this is a rewarding subject for a small diorama: it has a prominent ramp, an open cargo deck and the load is on show.
In 1:350 scale cleanness of work matters more than the number of parts. Fill and sand the joints of the hull and the deck carefully, otherwise they stand out under the paint. Paint the vehicles separately and glue them onto the deck at the very end — underneath them painting is awkward. It is a good idea to try the ramp dry and decide whether you want it lowered; a lowered ramp gives the scene a story. The classic sequence suits the hull: primer, the shade of the deck and the sides, a dark wash in the engraved lines and drybrushing on the edges. For believability it helps to mark the waterline, rust around the drains and a trodden surface on the cargo deck. The model can be built as a waterline version set into a water surface, or complete on a stand.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
