About product

Curtiss H-75 Foreign Pilots in 1:144 scale (Mark I)

A kit of the Curtiss H-75 fighter in 1:144 scale from the Mark I brand. The model is supplied as a plastic kit to be glued and painted; the Foreign Pilots edition name refers to the export operators of the type. The actual contents of the box, that is the number of kits, the additional parts and the number and form of the color schemes, are stated on the box and in the instructions. The 1:144 scale means a very small model, a format popular with collectors who want a large collection in a small space.

The real subject

Curtiss H-75 is the export designation of the Curtiss Model 75 fighter, which the US Army Air Corps adopted as the P-36 Hawk. It is an all-metal single-seat low-wing monoplane with a radial engine, retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit, structurally a step between the biplanes of the 1930s and modern fighters. The export versions were delivered outside the United States and differed in engine, armament and equipment according to the requirements of each operator; in British service the type flew under the name Mohawk. The H-75 airframe also became the starting point for a later family of machines with a liquid-cooled V12 engine.

Building and painting tips

In 1:144 scale the work is different from larger models: the parts are tiny, so a sharp scalpel, fine files and liquid cement for plastic applied with a brush pay off. Sand the mating surfaces on the fuselage and the wing carefully so that the fine engraved lines do not disappear. Mask the canopy with narrow tape or liquid mask; its area is small and any paint that creeps under it shows at once. Apply the paint in thin coats, because a heavy coat clogs the detail at this scale. The landing gear legs and the propeller are fragile, so fit them last. Apply the decals onto a polished gloss coat and use a decal softener so that they settle into the transitions; a matte or semi-matte coat will then even out the surface.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of the 1:144 scale who are building an extensive collection in a single display case
  • Modelers interested in the fighters of the late 1930s and their export versions
  • More experienced builders, because the small parts and fine joints call for patience and precision
  • Anyone drawn to the H-75 subject, of which the brand has several boxings in 1:144 scale; the editions are told apart by the name

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
