About product

He 162 Salamander — pitot tube 1:144 (MASTER)

A turned metal accessory in 1:144 scale from the Polish manufacturer MASTER, intended for models of the German jet fighter He 162 Salamander. It replaces the plastic pitot tube, that is, the dynamic pressure sensor placed on the nose. It is not a kit of the aircraft but a small replacement part.

Why replace the plastic part

The He 162 is a small aircraft even in ordinary scales and in 1:144 what is left of it is a genuinely tiny model. The final impression is therefore decided by the details at the edge of resolution, and a plastic pitot tube is one of them. Because of the technology, an injection-molded part has to be disproportionately thick, it tends to be warped and it often breaks while being taken off the sprue. A turned metal part has the correct slender shape, a sharp tip and it stands up to handling of a finished model.

The real subject

The He 162 was a German single-engine jet fighter from the very end of the Second World War. In design terms it was a very small and simple machine with the engine mounted in a nacelle above the fuselage, with twin vertical tail surfaces and with extensive use of wood in the structure of the airframe in order to save metal materials. The aircraft came into being under the pressure of an extremely short development deadline and it never came to extensive combat service.

Fitting tips

Cut the plastic original off as close to the surface as possible and level the area gently. Drill the hole in the nose gradually, from the thinnest bit to the final diameter; the wall is thin at this scale and a single coarse bit easily breaks through it. Glue the metal part with super glue applied in a minimal drop on the tip of a toothpick. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and use a primer for metal surfaces. Fit the tube only once the varnish and the decals are finished, as otherwise you will almost certainly bend it while masking.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of He 162 models in 1:144 scale.
  • Modelers who deal with the details at the edge of resolution in small scales.
  • More experienced modelers used to drilling small holes and gluing metal.
  • Those looking for a small upgrade with a visible effect.

This is not a kit of the aircraft but a metal accessory for one. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a turned metal accessory replacing a single small part on a model. The kit has to be obtained separately.

The number of pieces is stated on the box of the set.

On the contrary. At the same thickness turned metal is markedly stronger and above all it does not deform permanently. Fit it at the end of the build all the same.

Degrease it with alcohol, spray on a primer intended for metal and only then paint. Without a base coat the paint rubs off smooth metal.
