An injection-molded plastic kit of the American fighter Bell P-39 Airacobra in the small collector's scale 1:144. The box is marked for the D, F and K versions, which differed from one another above all in the power plant, the type of propeller and small details of the equipment. The small scale makes the model a rewarding item for a collection where whole type series are compared side by side.
Among the fighters of the Second World War the P-39 was a design exception. The Allison V-1710 engine was housed behind the cockpit, a drive shaft ran forward under the floor to the propeller and a 37 mm cannon fired through the axis of the propeller spinner. The aircraft had nose landing gear and you got into the cockpit through side doors as in an automobile. A single-stage supercharger robbed it of power at great altitudes, but it proved itself all the better at low altitude over the battlefield. A large part of production headed to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program, where the type was used very widely.
In 1:144 scale a clean surface and a thin layer of paint are what count. Use thin cement for plastic applied into an assembled joint, fill the fuselage joints only minimally and sand them down with fine abrasive paper, so that the engraved lines survive. Glue the propeller and the landing gear legs on only after the base color has been sprayed — it reduces the risk of breaking them off. For Soviet machines allow for more pronounced wear and dust on the lower surfaces, while on American examples count on a smooth metal surface, which benefits from a gloss base.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
