About product

P-39Q Airacobra in 1:144 scale

A kit from the Czech maker Brengun in the small 1:144 scale, which suits collectors with limited room in a display case and those who build whole series of aircraft at the same size. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Airacobra was among the most unusually arranged fighters of its day. The Allison engine was not in the nose but behind the pilot, a long shaft led to the propeller beneath the floor of the cabin, and in the nose thus freed a 37 mm cannon found a place, firing through the axis of the propeller. The aircraft also had a nosewheel undercarriage at a time when the tailwheel was the standard, and the cabin was entered through doors of automotive type. The Q version was the most numerous and differed mainly in its armament, carrying a pair of heavy machine guns in underwing pods instead of a group of machine guns in the wing. At altitude the aircraft fell behind, but near the ground, where a great part of the fighting on the Eastern Front took place, it proved itself; it was precisely there that most of the pieces built ended up under the Allied deliveries.

Building and painting tips

In 1:144 scale the cleanness of the silhouette decides everything. Cut the sprue gates off on a surface with a sharp scalpel and polish them over rather than breaking a part out; any burr is more visible on a small model than on a large one. Use a minimum of putty and sand instead, because scraping a surplus off a tiny fuselage is easier than smoothing it afterwards. The cabin need only be suggested, but mask the frame of the glazing exactly, because it is precisely that which makes the impression of a finished model. Thin the paints more than usual and spray in thin coats, so that the engraved detail does not disappear. The decals are small, so apply them onto a gloss ground and help yourself with a setting solution, so that they sit down into the detail without silvering.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of aircraft of the Second World War in 1:144 scale
  • modelers who build a collection of types at a uniform size
  • those interested in unconventional structural solutions for fighters
  • builders who want a quick project for one or two evenings

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It had the engine behind the pilot, a shaft led to the propeller beneath the floor of the cabin, in the nose it carried a 37 mm cannon and it had a nosewheel undercarriage.

Mainly in its armament. Instead of a group of machine guns in the wing it carried a pair of heavy machine guns in pods under the wing.

There are few parts, but they are small. What decides is a clean cut of the sprue gates, a minimum of putty and exact masking of the frame of the glazing.

That is not stated here. The instructions enclosed with the kit are what decides.
