A resin detail accessory for building the first generation Boeing 737 in 1:144 scale. It replaces the nacelle from a kit with a casting with a more accurate cross section and a better captured joint with the wing. It is not a model of the aircraft, but a replacement part for a build under way.
The JT8D is an older turbofan engine with a low bypass ratio. Most of the air flows through the core and the bypass duct is narrow, so the engine is slim, long and noisy. On the first generation 737 that led to an installation the later aircraft no longer have: the long thin nacelle is drawn up tight against the underside of the wing practically without a pylon, so it looks as if it has grown together with the wing. On the later machines with bulkier turbofan engines that was not possible and the nacelles moved forward onto a marked pylon. The JT8D-5, JT8D-7 and JT8D-9 designations meanwhile point to closely related power versions of the same engine, which differed mainly in thrust and in settings, not in external shape. Which one a particular aircraft got depended on the order of the carrier and on the takeoff weight required.
Wash the casting in warm water with dish soap, so the mold release agent disappears. Cut the pour blocks away with a saw; on a long slim nacelle watch that the part does not twist during sanding. Resin goes faster under paper than plastic, so start coarse and finish with fine wet paper. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). A snug installation against the wing has to be tried dry several times; on this type the gap between the nacelle and the wing is hard to hide, so fill it with super glue with a filler and sand it over. Apply the metal shades at the rear of the nacelle and inside the intake before assembly.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin casting for more experienced modelers. Glue, paints and a base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
