Low-visibility RAAF roundels in 1:144 scale

A decal sheet from the Mark I brand with the national insignia of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in the so-called low-vis treatment, that is, in muted colors with reduced visibility. According to the name it holds two sets of insignia in four diameters (18, 22, 24 and 36). It is not a kit - it is a set of markings with which you dress up a finished model in 1:144 scale.

The real subject

The Royal Australian Air Force uses a roundel derived from the British one, inside which the silhouette of a kangaroo stands in place of the central disc. At the time when combat aircraft moved to gray low-visibility camouflage, the national insignia went over to muted shades as well, so as not to raise the recognizability of the machine needlessly. It is precisely this form of the markings that the sheet covers, and because it offers several diameters it suits types of different sizes from fighters to transport aircraft.

How to apply the decals

First try dry which diameter suits the machine in question - with roundels the proportion to the fuselage and the wing shows at first glance. Spray the spot with gloss varnish, cut the decal out as close to the print as possible and dip it briefly in lukewarm water. Once it has slid off the paper, settle it with a brush, line it up and blot the water away. A decal softener will help the insignia settle over the riveting and into the engraved lines. At the end seal everything with varnish - with low-visibility schemes a matte or semi-matte one suits.
