About product

A photo-etched set for the Westland Wessex HC.2 and HU.5 in 1:144 scale

A set of photo-etched metal parts for a model of the Westland Wessex helicopter in the HC.2 and HU.5 versions, in 1:144 scale. It is cut for one particular kit, the Mark I Models one, and is bought in addition to a base model. On its own it is not a kit; you cannot build a finished helicopter from it.

The real subject

The Wessex HC.2 was the multi-role and transport version for the Royal Air Force, while the Wessex HU.5 was the version intended to carry assault troops for the marines. Compared with the anti-submarine variant these were transport machines without naval search equipment, with a cargo compartment, wide side doors and different cabin fittings. It is exactly the features around the doors, the steps and the handholds that are hardest to cast on a model in a small scale.

Work and painting tips

Brass or nickel-plated sheet is smooth and paint does not hold on it without preparation. The procedure is always the same: degrease with alcohol, let it dry thoroughly, apply a thin primer and only then paint. A heavy coat of finish fills the fine etching, so spray several thin coats rather than one generous one. It is practical to paint small parts while they are still on the fret, cut them off at the very end and touch the cut edges in with a brush. Make the bends in a bending tool or between razor blades, and on long parts work from the middle out to the ends. It is bonded with super glue in minute drops, as an excess dries on smooth sheet into a glossy patch that cannot be removed without damaging the part.

Who the set is for

  • builders of helicopter models in 1:144 scale
  • anyone interested in British transport and assault machines
  • modelers with experience of photo-etched parts, tweezers and super glue
  • those who want to tell the transport Wessex apart from the naval anti-submarine one

This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. The helicopter model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Yes. Brengun lists separate sets for the HC.2 and HU.5 transport versions and for the anti-submarine version, because the machines differ in equipment.

Most often because the sheet was not degreased or because a primer is missing. Smooth metal will not hold a finish on its own.

It is practical to paint flat parts while they are still on the fret and cut them off at the very end. The light spots left by the cut are then simply touched in with a brush.

No. What is sold is the set of photo-etched parts alone; you need to have, or buy separately, the kit.
