A working mat is a piece of equipment thought of last, and yet it affects every build. A soft cloth surface damps the bounce of small parts, so a part does not fly half across the room when dropped, it does not scratch the painted surface of a model put down on it, and at the same time it protects the top of the bench from glue and paint.
What the mat brings
A cloth mat is not a cutting mat — a knife will cut through it, so use a self-healing cutting mat for cutting. Wipe solvent glues, thinners and paints off at once; a dried stain stays in the cloth and can transfer to a light-colored part. Keep ridding the mat of dust and sanding swarf, otherwise the swarf sticks to a freshly painted surface. Do not use it as the only protection for a bench under an airbrush — overspray soaks into the cloth and stays in it. And if you build on a bench that serves other purposes as well, a mat pays off if only because at the end of the evening it can be moved aside with the build still on it.
