About product

3D cockpit decals for the F/A-18A Hornet in 1:32 scale

The sheet completes the cabin of the single-seat Hornet of the early series. The print is carried by a layered film with a thickness of its own, thanks to which the instrument panel and the side consoles gain real three-dimensional relief and cast a shadow when viewed from above. In the large 1:32 scale that shows most, because the cabin is big here and an open canopy leaves it in view. The set is intended for the Academy and Kinetic kits.

The A version and its cabin

The F/A-18A is the single-seat version of the so-called legacy Hornet, that is of the original series before the later upgrades. A single pilot sits in it, the instrument panel combines rectangular screens with conventional instruments, and control panels adjoin it at the sides. The set is cut precisely for this layout; it does not fit the two-seat B version, where a second cabin with a panel of its own sits behind the pilot.

Conforming to relief

A three-dimensional decal behaves differently from a conventional one. A thicker layer is harder to shape over edges, so dab it down with a damp soft brush or cloth, working gradually from the center toward the edges so that the air has somewhere to escape. Press the piece into details with a soft cotton swab and go over the surface with gloss varnish beforehand. Whether a decal softener can be used with it is to be checked in the manufacturer's instructions; manufacturers tend to be cautious about it with printed elements. If a piece does not seat properly the first time, let it soak in water for a while before you move it again.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the single-seat Hornet in 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who want to finish the cabin without photo-etched parts
  • Those who do not want to paint small instruments by hand
  • Collectors of naval carrier aircraft with an eye for detail

This is a cockpit accessory, not an aircraft model. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. The A version is single-seat and the sheet matches one cabin. For the two-seat versions there are separate sets with the second station.

Check that in the manufacturer's instructions for this set. A thicker 3D layer reacts differently from a thin conventional decal and manufacturers of printed elements tend to be cautious about softeners; rather press the piece into details with a soft cotton swab.

In much of it yes, because the relief of the print creates an impression of depth without bending metal. The particular comparison, though, depends on which photo-etched set you are comparing it with.

It is intended for the Academy and Kinetic kits.
