A set of die-cut masks for the national insignia with a white outline of a Zero model in 1:48 scale. With it the insignia is not applied as a decal but sprayed directly with paint. The form without the white outline is a separate item, so choose according to the machine you are building; an outlined and an unoutlined hinomaru differ on Japanese aircraft by period and by unit.
An outlined insignia is in fact two concentric areas, and that is exactly what makes it the most demanding variant. The procedure that gives the most reliable result goes from the light color to the dark: first the white area is sprayed across the whole diameter including the outline, it is left to cure properly, and only then is the inner circle masked and the red sprayed. The reverse order means covering red with white paint, which needs so many coats that a noticeable step builds up. Spray the white onto a cured airframe and rather onto a light base; over dark green, white needs more coats and goes grainy easily. Do not hurry between the two coats, because the accuracy with which the two circles are aligned decides the whole impression.
A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so it does not silver around its perimeter even on a matte surface and behaves exactly like the paint around it both when matting and when weathering. With a two-color insignia there is the further advantage that the outline has the same texture as the airframe, not the sheen of a decal film.
